There are some very strong viruses about this year and, while getting a flu jab may be one answer, it’s  really much more sensible to keep your immune system in tip top condition. Here are five simple ways to help your body to fight the onslaught of ailments as we transition into spring:

1. Exercise

During moderate exercise immune cells circulate through the body more quickly, and are better able to kill bacteria and viruses. According to Professor David Nieman of Appalachian State University those who walk at 70-75 of their maximum heart rate for 40 minutes per day had half as many sick days due to colds or sore throats as those who don’t exercise. (Luckily, too much exercise has the opposite effect! So don’t overdo it!)

2. Saunas (particularly Far Infra Red Saunas)

Their artificial, fever inducing and detoxifying properties stimulate the immune system and help the body to fight off any invasive organisms like bacteria or virus in the early stages of cold, cough, or flu.

3. Immune Tonics

The most commonly sold “neuraminidase blockers” are Tamiflu, Echinacea and Olive Leaf extract. Echinacea and Tamiflu stop the flu virus from taking over your cells and making you sick, but only work before you have symptoms as you are coming down with the illness.  Elderberry Extract is an amazing immune tonic, can be taken long term by children , old people and during pregnancy (tastes good too). It not only gets rid of colds but prevents you from getting them in the first place and can increase the amount of vitamin C your cells can uptake, along with other berries like blueberries and blackberries.

4. Hygiene

Wash your hands regularly. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze into your elbow to keep your hands from spreading germs. Essential oils such as Lavender, Manuka, Eucalyptus and Litsea Cubeba are excellent for cleaning surfaces, spraying in the air or diffusing. Litsea is great for airborne viruses.

5. Relaxation and Sleep

Stress makes you susceptible to illness, make sure you look after yourself, get plenty of sleep and relaxation. Tai Chi, Yoga or meditation are all good ways to do this. My favourite cure for stress is a nice, hot bath with some yummy essential oils…aaaahhhh…very relaxing.
