How does the mind affect the body?
Five Element Theory originated from Asia, and has been used for thousands of years to understand health and wellness for preventative medicine. The most widely accepted treatment using Five Element Theory is Acupuncture. According to this system there are Five Elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood ruling certain organs, systems, parts of the body, particular symptoms and mental, emotional and spiritual qualities.
The aim of Five Element Theory is to identify which of the elements is overactive or underactive in order to prescribe appropriate diet, exercise and treatment programmes to correct the imbalance. Mid winter is considered to be the time of the water element. Water rules the kidneys, the bladder and the bones. It brings in energy, courage and the ability to “go with the flow” to retain what is good in your life and let go of what is not good for you. At Balanced Energy we use Five Element Theory and Flower Essences to assist with balancing the mind and emotions. This enhances any physical treatment because the body responds to the way we think, feel and act. This is often called the “mind/body connection.” In response to stressful events, the body pumps out helpful hormones to deal with this, however, when the stress response goes on for too long these hormones weaken the immune system’s ability to fight disease. Every cell in the body contains a tiny clock called a telomere, which shortens each time the cell divides. Short telomeres are linked to a range of human diseases, including HIV, osteoporosis, heart disease and also aging. Studies show that an enzyme within the cell, called telomerase, keeps immune cells young by preserving their telomere length and ability to continue dividing. Scientists found that the stress hormone cortisol suppresses the immune cells’ ability to activate their telomerase. This may explain why the cells of persons under chronic stress have shorter telomeres.
Emotional stress also can aggravate existing health problems. It can worsen angina, disturb heart rhythm, raise blood pressure, and lead to stroke. It can spark asthma and may affect the digestive system, making ulcers, acid reflux, or irritable bowel problems worse. Stress can play havoc with your nerves and muscles, causing backaches, tension headaches, or migraines. Also, when we are feeling stressed, anxious or upset, we may not take care of our health as well as we should.
How can I improve my emotional health?
Structure a routine for eating healthy meals, getting enough sleep and exercising to relieve pent-up tension. Avoid overeating and abuse of drugs or alcohol. If feelings of stress or anxiety are causing physical problems, keeping these feelings inside can make you feel worse. Ask someone outside the situation, such as your family doctor or a counsellor for advice and support. Learning relaxation methods, such as Meditation, Yoga and Tai Chi are useful ways to bring your emotions into balance. Energy Healing treatments are deeply relaxing and give you time and space to identify what the cause may be and ways of dealing with this. Certain vitamins, herbs and minerals help to offset the effects of stress and strengthen the body. Flower Essences are natural non toxic remedies which balance the mind and emotions, helping you to cope well with what ever is happening, emotionally or physically.
